From Maha Episodes to Celebrity Cameos: Here are the latest trends of Malayalam TV in 2019

2019 is certainly one of the most eventful years for Malayalam television. From shows portraying powerful women as lead characters to reality shows with lesser amount of melodrama, the audience has witnessed a changing wave in the industry. Take a look at some of the latest trends of Malayalam TV in 2019.

In 2019, Malayalam soaps has witnessed some powerful characters as the protagonists. Be it Satya in 'Sathya Enna Penkutti' or Swathi in 'Swathi Nakshathram Choti', the lead characters no more 'teary-eyed' housewives or naives. They are strong and independent.

Malayalam TV is slowly coming out of the cliched storyline of typical saas-bahus sagas portraying a perfect daughter-in-law abused by her cruel mother-in-law. This year, the TV serials focused more on the bonding of siblings as the main plot. From 'Seetha Kalyanam' to 'Ilayaval Gayathri', a number of daily soaps portrayed the bonding and selfless love of siblings.

The visual aesthetic of Malayalam serials is certainly worth a mention. The frames capturing the serene beauty of Kuttanadu in 'Alliyambal' was well appreciated by the audience. Interestingly, the actors were seen twinning with their co-stars in most serials to make it appealing.

Malayalam TV has introduced this new trend to win eyeballs lately. Maha episodes are episodes with the duration of 60-90 minutes showcasing one of the major incidents in the storyline. When 'Kasthooriman' celebrated Shivani's wedding with a Maha episode, 'Sumangali Bhava' featured one of the major twists with the special screening.

Sitcoms were seen gaining much popularity among telly audience this year. 'Uppum Mulakum' successfully completing 1000 episodes and the weekend show 'Thatteem Mutteem' becoming a daily show, substantiate the love of Malayali audience towards sitcoms.
