The Madras high court dismissed Vedanta’s pleas challenging the closure of its Sterlite Copper smelter plant in Tuticorin. The court refused to allow reopening of the plant. Vedanta has approached the HC seeking to reopen Sterlite, which was closed in view of an order passed by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) dated May 23, 2018. Sterlite Copper CEO Pankaj Kumar in a statement said, “The verdict comes as an utter shock to the employees of Sterlite Copper and the thousands of small businesses, entrepreneurs and community members dependent on our continued operations.”
