Crews were removing a statue of Christopher Columbus and Queen Isabella from the California state Capitol on Tuesday. After the large statue was loaded onto a flatbed truck, workers could be seen wrapping it in blankets and plastic to protect it. The statue has been in the Capitol's rotunda since 1883. It's one of a number of statues of Columbus taken down around the country as part of an effort to remove symbols of oppression amid nationwide protests over police brutality and racism. The removal comes as the Capitol in Sacramento was closed for cleaning after a member of the California Assembly and other employees tested positive for COVID-19.
