Arizona's new governor has ordered a review of the procurement process for lethal gas and lethal injection drugs and other execution protocols, saying the state has a history of mismanaging executions. The review ordered by Gov. Katie Hobbs, the first Democrat to serve as the state's top official since 2009, came as the state's new Democratic attorney general withdrew her Republican predecessor's request to a court for a warrant to execute an Arizona prisoner. Last year, Arizona carried out three executions after a nearly eight-year hiatus after criticism that a 2014 execution was botched and because of difficulties obtaining execution drugs.
