Kerala LDF Government Backs Ban on Women at Sabarimala Temple: Political and Electoral Context

Kerala’s LDF government has announced a major policy shift on the Sabarimala temple issue, supporting the Travancore Devaswom Board’s position to bar women under 50 from the Lord Ayyappa shrine. This U-turn comes ahead of the state assembly elections and appears linked to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, when the Left Front lost 19 out of 20 seats, partly due to alienating traditional Hindu voters.The CPI(M) emphasizes the decision is meant to balance faith with constitutional rights and respond to Supreme Court queries. Opposition leaders, including the BJP and Congress, argue the shift is politically motivated and call for withdrawal of legal cases against previous demonstrators. The Supreme Court review hearings and election dynamics make Sabarimala a critical issue in Kerala politics.
