The Rajasthan government is actively working to designate Udaipur, known as the City of Lakes, as India's first wetland city. The Environment and Forest Department has selected Udaipur for this distinction under the Ramsar Convention of International Importance. Udaipur's natural beauty is heightened by the presence of five major lakes: Pichola, Fateh Sagar, Rang Sagar, Swaroop Sagar, and Doodh Talai. Currently, Udaipur is part of the National Lake Conservation Plan restoration project initiated by the central government. The state Environment and Forest Department is submitting a nomination to the Ramsar Convention for international recognition. Udaipur, with its 37 sq km area, meets all the criteria to be designated as a wetland city, a rare distinction held by only a few cities worldwide. Bhopal is also seeking this recognition. The Ramsar Convention, established in 1971, aims to conserve and sustainably use wetlands of international significance. Currently, 42 wetland cities exist across 17 nations globally, with China having the highest number at 13.
