Sophie Turner and Archie Madekwe reveal secret to their instant ‘Steal’ chemistry
Sophie Turner and Archie Madekwe lit up a recent interview, chatting about their new thriller series, 'Steal.' The nearly five-minute clip dives into their characters Zara and Luke, the show's killer tension, and how they built instant on-screen chemistry. Fans of British heists and crime dramas will eat up their honest takes.
Sophie Turner noted that she felt a personal connection to the role, seeing "bits of everyone she knows" within the character. She opened up on how Zara exists outside the typical hero-villain dynamic, describing her as "50 shades of gray", a personality shaped up by an unconventional and challenging background. Turner expressed a clear passion for the role’s complexity, noting, "I think (Zara) she's so nuanced and layered."
When asked about the foundation of their on-screen partnership, Madekwe highlighted the necessity of an immediate connection, "Well, we just knew that there needed to be an intimacy. There needed to be like a warmth of friendship. There was implicit trust."
Madekwe noted that they viewed Zara and Luke as professional workaholics whose isolated lives revolved almost entirely around their jobs and, by extension, each other. As Archie put it:
"We kind of we knew from the offset that these were two people that were very work orientated, single, their entire lives revolved around work and therefore each other... You know, they they were each other's kind of safe spaces in in that place."
Sophie's take on Zara's gray areas

Archie's emotional ride as Luke
In the same interview, Archie Madekwe addressed his character’s "panicked vibe" in the debut episode of 'Steal', admitting that the production successfully captured that "raw fear" from the start. Throughout much of the series, Luke remains in "panic mode," finding himself perpetually overwhelmed. While the creators considered giving him moments of greater confidence, they ultimately felt that staying "scared felt true." As the stakes rise, Luke becomes more "tenacious," attempting to survive through creative—though often unsuccessful—problem-solving.When asked about the foundation of their on-screen partnership, Madekwe highlighted the necessity of an immediate connection, "Well, we just knew that there needed to be an intimacy.
