'Govinda Naam Mera', 'Freddy' and more: Upcoming big star movies that ditched theatres for OTT

While the pandemic days have gone and theatres have opened, it will still take some time for the audience to go back in cinemas. While most Hindi movies that had a theatrcial release failed this year, a film like 'Drishyam 2' which is roaring at the box-office is giving Bollywood a reason to smile. Meanwhile, there are many star-driven movies that are ditching the theatres and opting for an OTT release. Let's take a look at some of these.

Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar, Kiara Advani starrer 'Govinda Naam Mera' was supposed to release in theatres in June this year. But, the makers have now opted for an OTT release despite the fact that the film is filled with a lot of entertainment, masala and mystery. The popularity of all the three actors, especially Vicky Kaushal is soaring and it has come as a big surprise that the film has ditched theatres. Karan Johar said during the film's trailer launch yesterday that, "This divide, I think we have created ourselves... that commercial films are theatrical and that alternate or slightly off-the-cuff films for digital (release)" The film will release on December 16.

Kartik Aaryan had his biggest hit this year in the form of 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2' yet, his next film 'Freddy' is set for an OTT release. This is one of his more unique characters and the trailer has been quite intriguing. It will also present him in a never-seen-before avatar. Due to the mysterious subject of the film and the off-beat story, the makers perhaps would have chosen the OTT route. 'Freddy' will release on December 2.

Sidharth Malhotra's 'Shershah' which released on OTT did very well and it's considered the actor's best work so far. It also brought him into the limelight back again. Now, as per reports, the makers of his next, 'Mission Majnu' have also decided to release the film on OTT. It stars 'Pushpa' star Rashmika Mandanna with him. Rashmika made her Bollywood debut with 'Goodbye' but it didn't do well at the box-office.

Shahid Kapoor's next 'Bloody Daddy' with Ali Abbas Zafar will release on OTT and not in the theatres. Zafar had said in an interview that he doesn't want the film to be censored because there's a certain kind of blood, action and guns in the narrative, hence the filmmaker has chosen to skip the theatrical release. The film is an official adaptation of the French film 'Nuit Blanche' and will see Shahid in an out-an-out action avatar.
