Philippines considers expelling Chinese Ambassador

The Philippines is contemplating the expulsion of Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian following heightened tensions in the South China Sea. Confrontations between Philippine and Chinese vessels at disputed reefs escalated over the weekend, as evidenced by videos released by the Philippine Coast Guard. Chinese ships deployed water cannons during resupply missions at Scarborough Shoal and Second Thomas Shoal, with a collision reported at the latter location. (AP Photo)

Philippine military chief General Romeo Brawner was aboard the Filipino supply boat involved in the collision. Diplomatic protests have been filed, and the Chinese ambassador has been summoned, according to foreign ministry spokeswoman Teresita Daza. Consideration is also given to declaring Ambassador Huang Xilian "persona non grata" in the Philippines. (AP Photo)

China defends coast guard actions amid South China Sea tensions

China contends that its coast guard acted "professionally" and "restrained," expressing dissatisfaction with Manila's actions. The China Coast Guard accused a Philippine supply boat of deliberately colliding with its vessel despite "multiple stern warnings." China's expansive claims in the South China Sea, including areas rejected by an international tribunal, have heightened tensions in the region. (AFP Photo)

Philippine-US Alliance resulted in increased military cooperation

The Philippines' alignment with the US has intensified under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., perceived as pro-US. In February, the US secured access to four additional military bases in the Philippines, strategically positioning itself to monitor Chinese activities in the South China Sea and around Taiwan. This move reinforces the arc of US alliances from South Korea and Japan to Australia. (AP Photo)

Philippines engages in joint patrols with US and Australia

Friction over sovereignty claims has led to joint patrols between the Philippines and the US and, earlier, with Australia. The South China Sea is not only a regional flashpoint but also a focal point in China-US relations. In October, President Joe Biden affirmed the US commitment to defending the Philippines in case of an attack, following two collisions between Filipino and Chinese vessels. Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Brunei also assert claims in the contested waters. (AP Photo)
