The Nice Carnival began on 15 February and will continue till 2 March 2025. This year’s theme, “King of the Seas and Oceans,” promises spectacular floats, dazzling performances, and a vibrant celebration of maritime wonders.

World famous celebration

Origin of the carnival

The first mention of the Nice Carnival dates back to 1294 when Charles d’Anjou, Count of Provence, described the "joyous days of Carnival." This historic celebration has evolved over centuries into one of the world's most famous and vibrant carnivals.

'Committee of the festival'

In 1873, Andriot Saëtone, a Nice resident, founded the "comité des fêtes" to organise the carnival and attract wealthy winter visitors. That same year, the first official carnival parade entered the city, marking the beginning of a spectacular tradition.

Grand spectacle

Until 1971, the Nice carnival grew into a grand spectacle, incorporating contemporary themes, grotesque humour, and fantastic elements. The floats became masterpieces of creativity, blending modern artistic techniques with the deep-rooted traditions of this historic festival.

Iconic battle of flowers
