US-Israel Strikes On Iran Live Updates: Hours after Hezbollah attack on Israel, massive explosions reported in Beirut

Israel Attack Iran Live Updates: Iran on Sunday appointed senior cleric Ayatollah Arafi as the interim Supreme Leader after Ali Khamenei's death in US-Israel strikes, state news agency IRNA reported.

Moreover, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned the killing of Khamenei as “an open declaration of war against Muslims, and particularly against Shiites, everywhere in the world,” following his death in a sweeping assault on Iran carried out by Israel and the United States.

US President Donald Trump early Sunday announced that Iran's Ayatollah Khamenei was killed in the US-Israel strike. Trump called Khamenei "one of the most evil men in history". Strikes continued in Israel as an Iranian missile strike in Tel Aviv killed one and injured 22 others.

Israel launched a daylight strike on Saturday targeting Tehran, the capital of Iran, with plumes of smoke seen rising from the city’s downtown area. The attack reportedly occurred near offices associated with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. It was not immediately clear whether the 86-year-old leader was present at the time. Khamenei has not appeared publicly in recent days amid rising tensions with the United States.

Israeli defence minister Israel Katz described the operation as “to remove threats,” but provided no further details. The strike comes as Washington has deployed a substantial fleet of fighter jets and warships to the region in an effort to pressure Iran over its nuclear programme. Tehran has warned that any escalation could result in attacks on American military personnel and bases across the region.

Witnesses in Tehran reported hearing the first blast near Khamenei’s office. Iranian state television later confirmed the explosion without specifying a cause. Following the strikes, Iran shut down its airspace, issuing warnings to pilots as additional explosions were reported across the capital.

Meanwhile, sirens sounded across Israel, prompting the Israeli military to issue a “proactive alert” and advise civilians to be ready for possible missile attacks. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) Home Front Command warned citizens to stay close to bomb shelters and avoid non-essential travel, although it noted that immediate sheltering was not required.

The situation affected international travel as well. Passengers at Tel Aviv airport, including those on Air India flight AI 140 to New Delhi, were asked to abandon their baggage and rush to bomb shelters. Air India announced it will suspend operations on the sector for a week to monitor the evolving situation.

The attack marks a serious escalation in the region, reflecting ongoing tensions between Israel, Iran, and the United States. The full extent of casualties, if any, remains unknown, and both military and diplomatic responses are being closely monitored.

Israel Iran War News: Israel defence minister says Khamenei's death 'turning point'

Israel’s defence minister, Israel Katz, said that the killing of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, represented a defining moment in the conflict with the Islamic Republic, arguing that it dealt a significant blow to what he described as a hostile regime’s capacity to threaten Israel. Katz framed the operation as striking at the heart of Iran’s leadership and security apparatus, underscoring Israel’s resolve to continue its military actions as needed.

"He led the campaign of destruction against the State of Israel, he built the entire axis of evil around us, and within Iran itself he pursued an uncompromising line against the State of Israel," Katz said, referring to Khamenei.

"Therefore, his elimination is a turning point, along with many other senior and significant officials who were eliminated together with him," he said during a security assessment along with top military and security officials, according to a statement by his office.

Arafi, a senior cleric with deep roots in Iran’s religious and political establishment, now takes on the task of guiding the Islamic Republic through a period of intensified regional strain and domestic uncertainty.

His rise gathered pace under Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who entrusted him with a series of influential posts, including leading Friday prayers in Meybod and later in Qom — roles widely seen as a sign of confidence from the country’s top authority.

Arafi went on to head Al-Mustafa International University, a major center for educating clerics from Iran and overseas, and in 2019 secured a seat on the powerful Guardian Council, which oversees legislation and vets electoral candidates. The Council on Foreign Relations has observed that his blend of administrative leadership and theological credentials firmly situates him within Iran’s clerical establishment, with his promotion reinforcing continuity within the existing religious power structure.

Senior cleric Ayatollah Arafi appointed Iran's interim Supreme Leader after Ali Khamenei's death, IRNA reported
Born in 1959 into a clerical family from Meybod in Yazd province, Arafi hails from a lineage that, according to Iranian accounts, traces its roots to Zoroastrians who converted to Islam in the 19th century. His father, Ayatollah (Sheikh Haji) Mohammad Ibrahim Arafi, was portrayed in state media as a close associate of Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic after the 1979 revolution. As the first generation of revolutionary clerics fades from the scene, figures like Arafi are increasingly viewed as part of the cohort with the credentials and connections to compete for higher authority in Iran’s evolving power structure.

IDF says Khamenei killed in ‘precise, large-scale’ Israeli operation
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) officially announced that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in an airstrike in Tehran yesterday.

In a statement, the military said Khamenei was targeted in a precise, large-scale operation carried out by the Israeli Air Force, guided by accurate IDF intelligence, while he was in his central leadership compound alongside other senior officials.

The IDF described Khamenei, who had served as Iran’s supreme leader since 1989, as directly responsible for the violent repression of Iranian citizens over many years.

“Khamenei was the architect of plans to destroy the State of Israel and was known as the ‘head of the Iranian octopus,’ with influence stretching across the Middle East, including Hezbollah. He was responsible for terrorist attacks against Israel, and the blood of many civilians worldwide was on his hands,” the IDF said.

The military added that Khamenei’s death “brings an end to a decades-long chapter with the elimination of the leader of the Iranian terror axis,” and noted it follows a series of targeted eliminations of senior figures in the terror network carried out by the IDF during the conflict.

Israeli defence minister Israel Katz described the operation as “to remove threats,” without providing further details.

The strike coincides with increased US military presence in the region, including fighter jets and warships, aimed at pressuring Iran over its nuclear programme. Tehran has warned that any escalation could target American personnel and bases.

Explosions were reported across Tehran, prompting Iran to shut down its airspace and issue warnings to pilots. In Israel, sirens blared nationwide, with the military advising civilians to be prepared for possible missile attacks and to stay close to bomb shelters.

The situation disrupted international travel, with passengers at Tel Aviv airport, including those on Air India flights, asked to leave their baggage and move to shelters. Air India has suspended operations in the sector for a week to monitor the evolving situation.

While the full extent of casualties remains unknown, the attack represents a significant escalation in regional tensions, with Israel, Iran, and the United States closely watching the unfolding developments.
