US-Israel-Iran War Highlights: US prepares for ground operations near Iran's Strait of Hormuz, Kharg Island

US Israel Iran War News: A month into Iran war, Donald Trump has outlined five objectives the US wants to achieve before ending its war with Iran. A month into the conflict, he has suggested the operation may soon be “winding down,” even as several goals remain unclear or only partially met.

Last week, Trump expanded the list to five objectives—up from four cited earlier by his team since the war began on February 28, and three initially outlined by the Pentagon and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. While the administration insists its aims are consistent, the priorities have shifted as the conflict strains the global economy, tests alliances, and raises questions about its planning and endgame.

Joint strikes by the US and Israel have significantly weakened Iran’s military and killed several senior leaders. However, these tactical gains do not necessarily ensure that Trump’s broader strategic objectives will be achieved. With the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps still in power, an incomplete outcome could carry both domestic political risks and global consequences.

The White House maintains the campaign is on track. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said “Operation Epic Fury” is progressing “ahead of schedule” and close to meeting its core goals.

  • The US says it has significantly degraded Iran’s missile capabilities, though Tehran continues to launch missiles and drones.
  • Strikes have targeted Iran’s defence industrial base, including weapons and drone production, but attacks from Iran persist.
  • The US and Israel have established air superiority and damaged naval assets, though some Iranian capabilities remain active.
  • Efforts to halt Iran’s nuclear progress continue, with key concerns around its enriched uranium stockpile still unresolved.
  • Protecting regional allies and securing routes like the Strait of Hormuz remains a stated goal, even as threats continue.

Iran War News: Hotels hosting US forces could be "legitimate" targets, Iran warns
Iran has issued a sweeping warning to hospitality operators across the Middle East, saying hotels and other civilian facilities housing US military personnel could be treated as “legitimate defensive targets” if such activity continues.

Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency, citing informed sources, said such locations are not limited to Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, and alleged that alternative accommodation sites for US forces have been identified in Syria, Lebanon and Djibouti as well.

The sources, described as close to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, called the warning “comprehensive and definitive,” adding that any facility hosting foreign military personnel — regardless of location — would be considered a target if the activity is not stopped immediately.

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed in a post on X that US troops had moved out of military bases in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and were staying in hotels and offices. He alleged that US forces were using “GCC citizens as human shield” and urged hotels in the region to deny bookings to American personnel.

Iran War News: IAEA chief warns strikes near Iran nuclear plant could trigger 'major radiological accident'
The head of the UN nuclear watchdog expressed “deep concern” Thursday over recent military strikes that “reportedly” took place near Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, warning that any damage to the operating facility could cause a “major radiological accident,” CNN reported.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said the latest strikes took place on Tuesday evening.

Because Bushehr is an operating nuclear power plant and contains “a large amount of nuclear material,” Grossi warned that damage to the facility could result in “a major radiological accident affecting a large area in Iran and beyond.”

Grossi again called for “maximum restraint” to avoid the risk of a nuclear accident and stressed the importance of observing what the IAEA describes as the “seven pillars” for ensuring nuclear safety and security during armed conflict.

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran said Tuesday that a projectile struck the grounds of the Bushehr nuclear plant on Tuesday night local time. It described the incident as a “renewed attack” by the “American–Israeli enemy.”

Iran War News: Spain says to boost energy partnership with Algeria
Algeria and Spain will boost their "strategic" energy partnership at a time when Algiers has been Spain's leading gas supplier for three years, the Spanish foreign minister said on Thursday.

Beginning a two-day visit and with no end in sight to the Iran war, Jose Manuel Albares called Algeria a "stable, reliable and steady gas supplier" after meeting President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Spain and Algeria are connected by the MedGaz pipeline, which is operating at full capacity but whose capacity could be increased by a billion cubic metres a year, US expert Geoff Porter has told AFP.

Albares said that during Thursday's talks, "it became clear that Algeria is a strategic friend and partner for Spain".

Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf's office hailed relations between both countries, "particularly in the energy sector".

Albares' trip comes a day after Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited and said Rome and Algiers would work towards "increasing deliveries of Algerian gas".

Italian energy major ENI and Algeria's Sonatrach would cooperate on projects including shale gas extraction and offshore exploration, she said at a joint press conference with Tebboune.

Spain's foreign minister on Thursday also welcomed a "spectacular increase in Spanish exports" to Algeria over the past two years, including a threefold rise in 2025 year-on-year.

The Algerian presidency said Tebboune told Albares of his decision to reactivate a 2002 friendship treaty with Spain.

Israel Iran War News: World Bank ready to respond 'at scale' to Middle East war fallout
The World Bank on Thursday said it was prepared to provide immediate financial assistance to countries in emerging markets dealing with the economic fallout of the conflict in the Middle East.

"We are ready to respond at scale -- combining immediate financial relief with policy expertise and private sector support for the recovery of jobs and growth," the World Bank Group said in its first statement on the crisis.

The multilateral donor and development agency said a number of its clients in affected countries had reached out as the crisis has begun to impact commodity prices and logistics.

The US-Israel war on Iran, launched on February 28, has plunged the region into conflict, with Iranian retaliatory strikes hitting US allies in the Gulf and elsewhere.

Oil prices have skyrocketed as Iran has virtually blockaded the key Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly a fifth of global energy supplies pass.

The halt in shipping has also snarled supply chains for several key commodities, including fertilizer, which could have knock-on effects on food security.

The World Bank said it would use a broad range of tools to help countries, including a "crisis response toolkit, and pre-arranged financing facilities."

"Clearly, this is an evolving situation and we cannot predict the full range of impacts," the statement said.

Iran War News: Hardliners push debate on Iran’s nuclear ambitions amid war
Sources in Iran say the debate among hardliners over whether Tehran should pursue a nuclear bomb amid escalating US-Israeli attacks is becoming louder and more public, reported news agency Reuters.

Following the death of veteran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28, the Revolutionary Guards have gained dominance, with hardline views on Iran’s nuclear strategy on the rise, two senior sources added.

While Western nations suspect Iran aims to develop a bomb, Tehran continues to deny it, citing Khamenei’s ban on nuclear arms and its commitment to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

US Iran War: 'Million fighters ready' - Tehran warns of 'historical hell' if US launches ground invasion
An Iranian military source told Tasnim on Thursday that speculation of a possible US ground invasion on Iran’s southern front has sparked a wave of enthusiasm among Iranian fighters to create a “historical hell” for American forces.

The source said over one million fighters have been organized, with a surge of Iranian youth requesting to join through Basij, the IRGC, and the Army. “The US wants to open the Strait of Hormuz with suicide tactics; that’s fine. We are ready for both their strategy and to keep the Strait closed,” the source added.

The US and Israel launched a large-scale campaign against Iran following the assassination of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei and other senior commanders on February 28. Extensive aerial strikes have targeted military and civilian sites, causing casualties and infrastructure damage. In retaliation, Iran has struck American and Israeli positions with missiles and drones.

The IDF said the 162nd Division began a raid several days ago in the western sector of southern Lebanon, describing it as a targeted ground operation aimed at expanding what it called the security zone.

Israel's defence minister Israel Katz has said Israel intends to maintain control of a security zone up to the Litani River until the Hezbollah threat is removed.

The IDF said the advance was preceded by heavy airstrikes and artillery shelling, and claimed the division has so far killed around 20 Hezbollah operatives. It added that four other divisions are already deployed in southern Lebanon, while a sixth elite division, the 98th, is being prepared for deployment.

Israel Iran War News: Vance says Iran’s conventional military ‘effectively destroyed’ as US weighs next steps
US Vice President JD Vance said Iran’s conventional military is “effectively destroyed”, arguing that the battlefield situation now gives Washington multiple options as the war enters a critical phase.

Speaking during a Cabinet meeting, Vance said those options include diplomatic negotiations or further military strikes, while warning that the bigger danger would be Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon.

US secretary of state Marco Rubio echoed that argument, saying a nuclear-armed Iran could pose a future threat to millions of Americans.

During the same meeting, defense secretary Pete Hegseth accused the media of misrepresenting the war and insisted the US was decisively defeating Iran, while President Donald Trump again signalled confidence in the military campaign even as indirect diplomacy remains in play.

I don’t know if we’re willing to do that.”

He also pushed back on reports suggesting Washington was eager for diplomacy, insisting it was Iran that had sought to restart negotiations. He said the air defence systems currently in the region are not sufficient on their own to fully counter Iran’s drone threat, and added that Kyiv is discussing future deliveries of certain Ukrainian equipment while also seeking access to air defence missiles held by regional countries.

Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s defence industry is operating at only half-capacity due to limited funding.

US Iran War: GCC chief accuses Iran of charging ships fees for safe Hormuz passage
GCC secretary-general Jasem Mohamed Al-Budaiwi said on Thursday that Iran is charging ships fees for safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first such public accusation by a senior Gulf official.

Speaking at a news conference in Riyadh, Al-Budaiwi said Tehran was demanding payments from vessels using the vital waterway, which once handled around 20% of global oil and gas flows.

The allegation adds to growing Gulf criticism of Iran’s actions in and around the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint central to the ongoing regional crisis.
The Israel-Iran war has entered Day 28 with the conflict widening in impact even as tentative diplomatic openings emerge. Military action remains intense across multiple fronts, but there is also growing evidence that regional and international actors are trying to create a framework for indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran.

A key development today is the increasingly assertive position taken by the Gulf Cooperation Council. GCC Secretary General Jasem AlBudaiwi said Gulf states want to be directly involved in any talks or agreements aimed at ending the crisis, arguing that the war has moved far beyond a bilateral US-Iran or Israel-Iran confrontation.

He said Gulf countries have been directly affected by Iranian missile and drone attacks, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, and wider threats to shipping, energy infrastructure and civilians. He also warned that Iran had been demanding payments from ships transiting Hormuz, deepening the legal and economic dimensions of the crisis.

At the same time, diplomacy appears to be inching forward. Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said US-Iran indirect talks are already taking place, with Pakistan acting as a messenger channel.

According to Dar, Washington has shared a 15-point proposal, now under review in Tehran, while Turkiye and Egypt are also supporting the effort. China’s foreign minister Wang Yi has described the current moment as a “glimmer of hope”, while Canada has publicly called for de-escalation, reopening Hormuz and a pathway that preserves civilian lives.

Despite this, military escalation continues. Israel said it killed IRGC Navy commander Alireza Tangsiri in an airstrike, a major claimed blow to Iran’s maritime command, and also announced fresh strikes in Isfahan. Meanwhile, Iranian missile attacks lightly injured six people in Israel, while the wider regional spillover remains serious: two people were killed and three wounded in Abu Dhabi after falling debris from an intercepted ballistic missile. On the Lebanon front, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem has vowed continued resistance, and one Israeli soldier was killed in fighting against Hezbollah in south Lebanon.

The war’s economic consequences are now becoming global. Oil prices remain elevated, with Brent above $100 and WTI near $90, while governments are beginning to react. South Korea has announced a $17 billion wartime supplementary budget and fuel tax relief to cushion the energy shock. Even as Russia denied reports of a drone shipment to Iran, and Trump intensified his rhetoric against both NATO and Tehran, the overall picture remains one of extreme volatility: a war still expanding, but with a narrow diplomatic window just beginning to open.
