Comfort push: Shatabdi, Jan Shatabdi trains set for nationwide revamp
New Delhi: Amid the push for more Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains, the railways has begun work on improving the currently operational Shatabdi Express and Jan Shatabdi Express trains. It has drawn up a plan to enhance comfort, aesthetics, and onboard service quality on these premium trains under a nationwide campaign.
In a communication to all zones, the Railway Board has directed them to conduct detailed inspections of train rakes and prepare time-bound action plans to address deficiencies in passenger amenities. “The focus is on modernising the flagship trains and continuing to meet rising expectations in terms of cleanliness, reliability, and modern amenities,” a railway official said.
Key areas identified for upgradation include improved toilet facilities with better fittings and drainage systems; enhanced seating comfort with upgraded upholstery and functional amenities such as charging ports and snack tables; and smoother ride quality through the reduction of jerks in coaches. Improvements to vestibule areas, gangways, and overall coach interiors, including flooring and panels, are also part of the plan.
Railway officials said the initiative also emphasises better lighting across coaches, improved exterior appearance, clearer destination boards, and the strengthening of digital passenger information systems (PAPIS), along with CCTV-based surveillance to enhance safety and communication.
Railway officials said that this structured upgradation effort focuses on passenger-centric reforms. Zonal Railways have also been asked to carry out audits, identify gaps, and implement corrective measures with strict monitoring mechanisms.
There are approximately 25 pairs of operational Shatabdi Express and over two dozen Jan Shatabdi Express connecting major cities across the country.

The common man fits nowhere; despite paying the full fare, they are forced to endure suffocating crowds in railway coaches, often traveling long distances seated in washrooms. With two to three times more passengers than the actual seating capacity, there is now virtually no difference between the dismal condition of general and reserved coaches.Read allPost comment
