The new GST structure is two-tier in nature - with 5% and 18% as the main tax slabs. Several items have been moved to the 0% or nil tax bracket, while ‘sin’ goods will now be taxed at 40%. Paneer, Indian breads, and several life saving drugs will also now come under the 0% tax bracket. The new GST rates will be effective from September 22, which is the first day of Navratris.
