Gone in 60 minutes: Locals loot 700 cartons of apples from overturned truck in less than an hour, before cops arrive

Agra: It was a free-for-all for Agra residents after a truck ferrying 719 cartons of apples turned turtle, spilling the contents near the Jaipur highway. The news of the accident spread like wildfire in Malpura police jurisdiction. Within minutes, scores of residents rushed to the spot and looted the entire consignment. A video of the act was uploaded and widely shared online.The accident took place at South bypass road near the Dhabali turn.
Ashok Sharma, an eyewitness who shot the video, said, “Each of the residents carried as much cartons as they could lay their hands on. Some even brought sacks to collect the apples and later sold them in the local market.”
“By the time police arrived at the spot, the show was almost over. Police could manage to save only 5-10 cartons of apples,” he said.
Speaking with TOI, Malpura station officer Ramesh Bhardwaj said, “By the time, police arrived at the spot, most of the apples were looted by local residents. Fortunately, the driver of the truck Kandhyar Singh suffered minor injuries.”
“He was ferrying the apples from Shimla to Guna in Madhya Pradesh. An estimate of the losses caused by the accident is yet to be known,” he said.
According to the police, truck’s axle broke down on the bypass which flipped the vehicle on the road. The impact of the accident was so severe that truck was completely mangled.
