14-year-old intervenes in fight, stabbed in eye with a compass in Gujarat
AHMEDABAD: A A 14-year-old student's attempt to play peacemaker in a fight between classmates has left him with severe eye injuries and a fight to save his vision. The Class 8 student at Isanpur Public School was struck in the eye with the pointed edge of a compass rounder by a fellow student while trying to stop a fight on Monday morning.
"The father of the injured student lodged a complaint against the accused, but the latter cannot be arrested since he is a minor," said Narol inspector J B Agrawat.
The incident occurred following an exam at the school on Narol-Vatva Road. The FIR stated that an argument broke out between the victim's friend and another student after the paper ended at 11.30am. The victim stepped in to separate the two boys.
During the scuffle, the accused student allegedly pulled out the geometry tool and lashed out, piercing the victim's eye. Panic ensued and some students informed the teachers. The injured boy was taken to a medical facility, and later shifted to LG Hospital before being referred to Asarwa Civil Hospital for specialised care.
The family raised serious allegations regarding the school's emergency response. The boy's mother claimed the injury occurred around 11.30am, yet surgical care at Civil Hospital only commenced after 3pm. Medical reports indicate serious damage to the upper and inner portions of the eye. Cops noted that doctors are currently unable to confirm if the boy's vision can be restored.
In their defence, school authorities suggested the altercation might have occurred outside the campus after hours and claimed a parent and a teacher immediately assisted the student to a nearby urban health centre. The Municipal School Board has now ordered a formal inquiry to establish the exact sequence of events.
