Houses razed, woman suffers heart attack

A group of officials from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and a team of builders arrived at a slum in Juna Vadaj, Sector 5, on Thursday morning and began to forcibly demolish houses. A local woman, who was inside one of the houses being demolished, suffered a heart attack and was taken to a nearby hospital. This sparked anger among the residents of the slum, who took to the streets to protest. The protesters then gathered a petition and delivered it to the district collector. They also threatened to commit suicide if the demolition continued. The AMC has been carrying out the demolition project, part of a larger redevelopment project called Ramdevpir Tekra, in Ramdevpir Tekra, a slum in Juna Vadaj, Sector 5, since Thursday. The residents of the slum have been protesting the project, claiming that it is unconstitutional and that they were not given adequate compensation for their homes. Advocate Narendra Parmar, a resident of the slum, has said that many of the residents want bigger houses than those offered by the authority as compensation.

This sparked anger among the locals, who came out in large numbers to protest. They took out a rally, causing traffic jams and handed a petition to the district collector. They threatened to commit suicide if the demolition was not stopped immediately.
Ramdevpir Tekra slum redevelopment project is part of the Smart City Project. The entire slum was divided into six sectors. In 2016, AMC approved the tender for the redevelopment of these six sectors. “The demolition is unconstitutional. It benefits the builder and the locals disagree with the project. Many of the residents want bigger houses than those offered by the authority as compensation,” advocate Narendra Parmar, a resident said.tnn
