GANDHINAGAR: In a strange move, the Gujarat government suspended the man who took charge as managing-director of the state-owned Gujarat Sheep and Wool Corporation Ltd (Gusheel) from additional DGP Kuldip Sharma.
Sharma, who is locked in a battle with the state government since the 2002 riots, and was refused a deputation, quietly slipped out of the state on a deputation to Delhi without informing the state government, in April.
He is reported to have joined the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D).
Sharma was sidelined on the Gusheel job as managing director in 2009, as the state government did not want him to do any policing job. An IAS officer has been occupying this post so far. "Bharat Mehta, general manager (marketing), Gusheel, was first served a show-cause notice to explain why he took charge from Sharma without informing the government. As the reply was not found to be satisfactory, he has suspended from service", Sachivalaya sources said.
While the show-cause notice was handed over to him immediately, the suspension came early this week. "Mehta is quite junior. Sharma is one of the senior-most officials in the IPS. Mehta merely obeyed what Sharma as MD of Gusheel wanted him to do. The suspension smacks of the vindictive nature of those at the top", said an official .
Sharma's brother Pradip Sharma, an IAS officer, is in jail in a quake rehabilitation scam of 2001. He has also been suspended.
