ALLAHABAD: Even as the rainfall on Sunday much needed relief from the hot weather conditions, waterlogging in several areas has posed a new challenge to the locals. The waterlogging also exposed Allahabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) claim of extensive drain cleaning before monsoons as water has entered in houses of several localities in low lying areas.
The areas affected with waterlogging include Allahpur, LIC Colony, Sanjay Nagar, Shiv Nagar, George Town, Tagore Town, Mumfordganj, Attarsuiya, Kotha Parcha, Muthigunj, Sabzi Mandi, Batsha Mandi, Dariyabad, Kareli, Ghausnagar, Chowk, Bahadurgunj, Nakhas Kohna, Lukerganj, Mohtashimgunj, Clock Tower, Ahmadgunj, Dara Shah Ajmal, Subzi Mandi and other adjoining areas.
The problem was accentuated in the low lying and old city areas where the drains are usually clogged and water overflows on the streets. In addition to this, there were several areas in the city which also witnessed extensive water logging as there is complete absence of proper drainage system. There was excess waterlogging in the areas of Sanjay Nagar and Shiv Nagar as water entered many houses in the area.
People blamed AMC for failing to adopt a comprehensive strategy to solve the menace of waterlogging in city and taking steps for cleaning the drains.
Mahendra Saraswat, resident of Alllahpur said, “Each year we have to face the problem of waterlogging and AMC does nothing to solve this problem. The drains are often choked and are not cleaned which leads to waterlogging.”
Due to Ramzan, shopping in twin marketing areas, Chowk and Kotha Parcha, was also affected due to the rainfall. The mud on the roads has turned into a sludge in the rain due to which commuters have to face problems while negotiating on such roads.
