Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Celebrations after the counting of votes for the municipal corporation elections were marred by political violence in the city late on Friday, when a mob attacked the residence of BJP candidate Bunty Chawariya in the Gandhi Nagar area. The police have arrested nine people so far.
The attack allegedly followed Bunty Chawariya's defeat in the polls, even as victory processions and celebrations were underway in other parts of the city.
Inspector Sunil Mane, of the Kranti Chowk police station, told TOI, "BJP candidate Bunty Chawariya's house was targeted by a group of youths armed with sticks and wooden poles soon after the election results were declared. The preliminary probe revealed that Shiv Sena candidate Milap, alias Millu Chawariya, had also contested the election from the same ward, and he too had lost. Millu Chawariya's supporters held Bunty Chawariya responsible for the defeat and — acting out of anger over the poll outcome and an old rivalry — attacked his residence."
Based on a complaint filed by Bunty Chawariya, the Kranti Chowk police registered a case against 14 people, including Millu Chawariya.
Police officers said offences related to rioting, unlawful assembly and damage to property have been invoked. Inspector Mane added that of all the accused seen carrying out the attack on CCTV camera, nine have been arrested. Police teams are also working to nab Millu Chawariya, who is currently on the run.
Taking serious note of the attack, police commissioner Pravin Pawar has ordered the deployment of police bandobast outside the homes of the winning candidates.
The sudden violence triggered panic among residents of the crowded locality. CCTV footage accessed by the police showed several youths carrying sticks and hurling stones towards the house. The stone-pelting resulted in extensive damage, with window panes shattering and multiple vehicles parked outside the house suffering damage. Neighbours said the sound of breaking glass and stones hitting walls sparked fear, forcing many residents to remain indoors.
Further investigation is underway, and the police assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible to prevent any further escalation of tension in the area.
The political atmosphere in the area remained tense, with residents expressing concern over the growing trend of post-election violence.
