Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Six people were arrested on Friday for allegedly issuing death threats to a doctor and attempting to extort Rs 5 lakh from him.
Police identified the arrested as Jafar Noor Khatik, Mohammad Sameer Mohammad Zakir, Syed Mushahid Ali Mumtaz Ali, Shaheen Bano Abu Hamza, Rubina Habib Qureshi and Siddharth Kailas Raemale of Dhule. "They were caught red-handed while collecting the cash from the complainant at a hospital," police said.
According to police, the complainant approached the City Chowk police station after the group allegedly threatened to kill him and demanded Rs 5 lakh. "The accused repeatedly called him between March 5 and 13, issuing threats while insisting on payment," an officer said.
Refusing to succumb to the extortion demand, the complainant lodged a complaint with the police. Acting on the information, a team led by assistant inspector Manoj Shinde, under the guidance of inspector Nirmala Pardeshi, laid a trap, leading to their arrest. During the operation, the police also seized six cellphones and a car used by the accused.
