SAMBHAL: Local minority leader and president of Muslim Kisan Union Inam-Ur-Rehman Khan was arrested for burning an effigy of US president Barrack Obama during his R-Day visit.
There were various protests by minority leaders in the city after Khan was picked on Saturday and sent to Moradabad district jail.
Additional superintendent of police, Sambhal, Vinod Kumar Mishra, told TOI: “Inam-Ur-Rehman Khan was wanted by the police for burning an effigy of Barack Obama.
On Saturday, Kotwali police personnel arrested him.”
According to Mishra, local courts have also issued several non-bailable warrants against Khan for delivering hate speeches and burning effigies of then PM Manmohan Singh and President Pranab Mukherjee during hanging of Afzal Guru.
Station house officer of Kotwali police station Anil Mishra said, “On February 9, 2013, Kotwali police had registered an FIR against Khan for using derogatory language against then PM and President and burning their effigies following Guru’s hanging.”
Sambhal city circle officer Jagveer Singh Attri said, “On Friday, a fresh case was registered against Khan at Nakhasa police station for burning an effigy of VHP leader Parveen Togadia.”
The communally-sensitive city is tense due to Togadia’s scheduled visit here on February 14. Khan had announced that he would not allow the VHP leader to visit Sambhal.
According to police officials, Khan was booked under sections 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) 141 (unlawful assembly) 341 (wrongful restrain) and 12A (prevention of burning of effigies of the heads of state) of the United Province of Special Power Act 1932.
