According to a BEST official speaking to news agency PTI, 28 buses, including seven hired from private contractors, broke down due to waterlogging on Wednesday.

As per IMD, Mumbai is likely to experience a 'generally cloudy sky with heavy rain' today.

Over a five-hour span starting at 5 pm on Wednesday, parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region were hit by over 200mm of rain, leading to four deaths, widespread waterlogging, traffic chaos, and disruptions on the Central Railway (Western Railway remained unaffected). Additionally, 14 flights had to be diverted.

In response to the red alert in place until 8:30 am on Thursday, civic authorities in Mumbai and Thane declared a holiday for schools and colleges. Commuters faced hours of delays on roads, at stations, and in trains. Among the casualties were a 45-year-old woman who drowned in a nullah in Andheri East, two individuals struck by lightning while working at a stone quarry in Varap village, Kalyan, and another woman who drowned near the Zenith waterfall in Khopoli.

The IMD upgraded its orange alert to a red alert in the evening for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad, warning of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at isolated spots until 8:30 am on Thursday. Following this period, an orange alert is in effect for Thursday.
