1/10

Hebbal loop construction expedited

Greater Bengaluru Authority has directed the Bangalore Development Authority to complete the critical Hebbal flyover loop within 15 days. The new connector aims to streamline traffic from Kempegowda International Airport into the city, reducing long delays at this major junction.

2/10

Minimal disruption from KIA traffic

Once operational, the loop will allow vehicles arriving from KIA to enter Bengaluru with fewer interruptions. It is expected to ease congestion during peak hours, ensuring smoother movement for commuters traveling from northern suburbs to central and eastern parts of the city.

3/10

Hebbal flyover’s capacity challenges

Constructed in the early 2000s, the flyover was never designed for current traffic levels. The surge post-KIA opening in 2008 has overwhelmed the junction, turning it into one of Bengaluru’s most congested spots, with kilometre-long queues forming during rush hours.

4/10

Reducing chaotic merging

Dedicated lanes in the new loop will channel traffic from Yelahanka, Jakkur, and Sahakaranagar efficiently. By separating streams before they merge, the flyover aims to reduce delays and bottlenecks, allowing vehicles to move smoothly into the city without clogging the existing infrastructure.

5/10

KR Pura flyover arm already functional

The new flyover arm connecting KR Pura to the city has been completed and opened to traffic. This has already improved flows from key northern localities, and the linking loop will integrate the old and new flyovers to optimize overall traffic distribution across the junction.

6/10

Connectivity improvement milestone

The Hebbal loop is a critical milestone in the city’s traffic management strategy. With proper integration into the existing network, it will distribute vehicles efficiently across multiple entry points, enhancing overall connectivity and improving travel times for thousands of daily commuters.

7/10

Expedited steel girder installation

Rao instructed officials to speed up the placement of remaining steel girders and complete pending works. All civil foundations for loop-supporting columns are done, with most complex phases of girder installation across three spans nearing completion, along with painting and fabrication.

8/10

Supporting rapid urban growth

Residential and commercial development around Hebbal and Thanisandra has intensified traffic pressure. The new loop is designed to handle increased volumes from expanding suburbs, addressing the rising commuter demand and preventing further congestion at a historically constrained junction.

9/10

BDA’s commitment to decongestion

The Bangalore Development Authority continues to prioritize infrastructure projects that ease congestion. The Hebbal flyover loop reflects a larger effort to enhance urban mobility, ensure commuter safety, and support the city’s expanding transport demands with modern, well-planned structures.

10/10

Smart traffic monitoring and management

The new Hebbal loop will be equipped with advanced traffic sensors and CCTV systems to monitor vehicle flow in real time. Data collected will help authorities adjust signal timings, manage congestion proactively, and respond quickly to incidents, ensuring smoother and safer movement across this busy junction.

Few years ago a study by one of the IITs showed that increasing road capacity does not necessarily solve traffic problem. This is because as things get better they only get worse. Smoother traffic attracts more vehicles towards it and soon things go back to square one.
