Lift malfunction at club in Bengaluru leaves lawyer seriously injured

Bengaluru: A dinner outing turned into a nightmare for a lawyer after a malfunctioning lift at a club led to serious injuries following a fall.The injured — Ramesh K, a resident of Kamakshipalya — visited the Chord Road Residents Association Club in Vijayanagar on April 16, along with some friends. They went to a restaurant on the terrace around 7.45pm. After finishing their meal, they went to the fourth floor at 10.30pm. While a couple of them opted to use the stairs, Ramesh and another friend stepped into the lift to descend.As the lift moved between the fourth and third floors, it suddenly lost power and came to an abrupt halt mid-air. Trapped inside, the two endured 10-15 minutes of panic as the lift began jerking violently, repeatedly attempting to restart. Ramesh alleged that with no emergency alarm system, no trained operator, and poor mobile network connectivity, and the situation quickly escalated.Struggling to breathe and fearing for their lives, the duo shouted for help. Eventually, Ramesh managed to contact one of his friends, alerting him to their dire condition.As the lift continued to shake, showing signs of a possible crash, people outside rushed to help. In a desperate rescue attempt, they forced open the lift doors halfway and first pulled Ramesh's friend out. However, in that critical moment, the lift jolted violently again. Ramesh lost balance and fell through the gap from the lift cabin down to the ground floor.He sustained serious injuries, including fractures to his left hand, fingers, leg, and hip, along with facial injuries and broken teeth. He was rushed to a hospital and underwent treatment.Ramesh accused the club management and lift maintenance staff of gross negligence. Govindaraja Nagar police have registered a case and served notice on the club management.
