BHOPAL: State capital's most frequented three-lane road at Reth Ghat to Kamla Park has been effectively reduced to a single-lane stretch. The road was re-laid last winter, a first in almost a decade. The swift ride has, however, ended. It been almost a week since water supply line leakage lead the civic body dig up and plug.
"Any semblance of bitumen layer gone.
The hump is at the narrowest part of the incline. Hard to anticipate and due to encroachments on the left, any deviation to the left can be fatal. There are no hazard indicators and moving to the right is not an option," said Sumit Sharma, a local resident.
This side of the road is a one-way. Originally it was a two way. It fell short by a few meters to meet the BRTS standard. To compensate, Rs 40 crore was spent on a 'cable stay' bridge around 2018.
The four-lane became a three lane. As time has progressed, one lane has been converted into an illegal parking. Some vehicles are parked for weeks without moving.
A left turn after the Reth Ghat intersection going towards Taliya has used to be encroached by one lane of cars parked on the left. It has increased to two. Personnel manning the police check post behind and upfront, have never found the will to clear the encroachment. "Police seldom stops hundreds of vehicles plying on the wrong side. It almost feels like its normal to move in the wrong direction. Reflects poorly on the city. Its wishful thinking anything might be change. Traffic movement will only get worse," said Sadia Khan, a student.
