Surge in persisting cough cases disrupts exam prep

Bhopal: With board exams and college tests underway and rise in OPD admissions in city hospitals, doctors are warning of a surge in post-viral bronchitis among students—turning study marathons into unexpected health setbacks."We're seeing 25–30% more teens and young adults in OPDs. Coughs that linger for weeks after viral fevers are disrupting exam preparation. While not too unusual, the year-on-year rise is notable," said Dr Parag Sharma from Gandhi Medical College's pulmnology department.
Persistent wheezing, fatigue and chest tightness often follow seasonal flu, colliding with the high-pressure exam season and leaving parents anxious. Winter's cold nights, dry days, and pollution spikes further weaken immunity.In the past two weeks, doctors have noted airway inflammation in patients aged 12–25. Most recover with rest and inhalers, but some require nebulization to cope with both symptoms and exam stress. A private hospital in Govindpura reported 40 student cases in just five days. One 17-year-old board aspirant shared, "The fever is gone, but the cough kills my focus, I've missed two mock tests.""Stress weakens immunity. Ignoring early coughs can risk pneumonia, especially in those with preexisting conditions," cautioned Dr Rajiv Singh. Treatment typically involves inhalers, nebulizers, and rest—antibiotics are avoided since the root cause is viral. Low uptake of flu vaccines among youth is worsening the spread.Experts trace the surge to viral waves that swept the city in 2025, now evolving into bronchitis through mucus buildup and airway spasms. As per specialists, the most vulnerable groups include smokers, asthmatics, and hostel residents living in dusty environments— for whom risks are further heightened by frequent eating out. Health experts suggest parents to ensure venerable wear masks, keeping hydrated and steam inhalation would help.
