Bhubaneswar: In a significant move to enhance urban infrastructure and ensure a seamless experience for both residents and visitors, city authorities embarked on an extensive road repair initiative across the city.
This effort comes as a major relief to people with the festive season fast approaching. The public works department assumed responsibility for refurbishing the city’s major thoroughfares.
Similarly, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is focusing on the internal roads within various localities of the state capital. Both entities have set deadlines to complete the work, keeping the festivals in mind.
This effort aims to address the deteriorating road conditions that have plagued the city, exacerbated by recent heavy rain. Priority is being given to roads in proximity to major puja pandals, ensuring that the festive celebrations proceed without logistical hindrances.
Key routes, including the Cuttack-Puri roads, are undergoing a complete overhaul, while other roads are receiving temporary patchwork with bitumen filling to address immediate concerns.
The deplorable state of the roads has long been a source of inconvenience and safety risk for commuters. Minor accidents were frequently reported from several localities due to the bad condition of the roads.
Recognising the urgency, the works department initiated repair work on several critical routes, including Sachivalaya Marg, Jaydev Vihar–Nandankanan Road, Jagamara Road, Madhusudan Marg, and the road between Acharya Vihar Square and Sainik School.
Simultaneously, the BMC is addressing road repairs in key localities such as Soubhagya Nagar, Laxmi Vihar, Sailashree Vihar, Niladri Vihar, Acharya Vihar, Nayapalli, IRC Village, Patia, and the Infocity area.
This comprehensive approach is designed to ensure that all areas of the city benefit from improved road conditions. In a recent meeting, the works department and the BMC coordinated their efforts, setting a clear agenda for the repair work.
Works minister Prithiviraj Harichandan set a deadline of Sept 20 for the completion of all repairs, underscoring the urgency of the task. Local residents have expressed cautious optimism about the initiative.
“The roads should be repaired and corrected periodically. The authorities should not have waited for this condition in the first place. However, it is a welcome step that the repair work will be completed before the festivals,” said Niraj Patra, a resident of Patia.
Officials said that as the city gears up for the festive season, the timely completion of these road repairs promises to significantly enhance the urban experience, ensuring safety and convenience for all.
