State sets target to irrigate 15 lakh hectares by 2029-30

Bhubaneswar: The state has set an ambitious target to irrigate 15 lakh hectares of agricultural land by 2029-30, announced chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi during his visit to the water resources department at Rajiv Bhawan on Saturday, where he reviewed the department’s comprehensive activities, particularly focusing on irrigation strategies.His visit underscored the importance of efficient water management as he observed the operations at the State Hydrological Data Centre. The centre plays a crucial role in real-time water management, providing vital data on water levels in reservoirs and rivers across the state. This data is instrumental in planning and executing irrigation projects that aim to maximise water usage and reach the farthest ends of the canal systems, a govt statement reads.During discussions with department officers, engineers, and employees, Majhi emphasised the need for commitment and innovation in achieving the state’s irrigation goals. He expressed satisfaction with the current efforts but urged the department to transform it into a more efficient and smart entity to meet future challenges.He highlighted the importance of ensuring that water reaches the tail end of the canal systems, a critical factor in achieving equitable water distribution for agricultural purposes. This approach is expected to boost agricultural output and support the livelihoods of farmers across the state.Accompanying the chief minister were development commissioner and additional chief secretary of the water resources department Anu Garg, engineer-in-chief Chandrasekhar Padhi, and other senior officials, all of whom briefed the CM about the department’s activities and upcoming plans.
