Truck hits car, drags it for several kilometres; police intercept driver after dramatic chase
BHUBANESHWAR: A truck crashed into a car and dragged it for several kilometres in Bhubaneswar on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.
The truck driver was identified as Jagamohan Bhukta (40) from Kantiapada in Boudh district.
The people inside the car were safe and no major injuries were reported.
According to police, the PCR-6 team, comprising Constable No. 1300 Shri Kongress Nahak (59), OAPF-327 Shri Pradeep Kanhar of Kandhamal, and Home Guard No. 495 Shri Anil Sahu, acted with courage, presence of mind and professional skill while dealing with the incident.
Police said the team witnessed the accident at around midnight near the Gangua Nala bridge under Mancheswar Police Station limits. After quickly assessing the situation, the officers concluded that trying to stop the truck directly could have led the driver to ram the PCR vehicle, putting police personnel and other road users at risk. T
o avoid this, the team worked out a strategy to stop the vehicle safely. They overtook the truck without alerting the driver that they were following him. They then coordinated with another Hyva truck to block the road and create artificial traffic congestion near Mother’s Public School under Pahal Police Station limits.
The plan worked, forcing the truck driver to stop. The PCR team immediately detained him and seized the truck.
During questioning, Bhukta told police that he did not stop after the accident because he feared being attacked by members of the public and continued driving while dragging the car.
Legal action is being initiated. Police said an FIR is being registered and the accused driver will be arrested and produced before the court in accordance with the law. According to police, the swift response, sound judgment and brave actions of the PCR team helped prevent further danger and led to the successful arrest of the accused.
The information is preliminary and may change as more facts emerge during the investigation.
