Admissions to class XI tougher

With over 600 students scoring 90% and above in the CBSE X exams, admissions in senior secondary schools have largely witnessed a rise in cut-offs.

CHANDIGARH: With over 600 students scoring 90% and above in the CBSE X exams and in view of increase in the overall percentage scored by students this year, admissions in senior secondary schools have largely witnessed a rise in cut-offs in all the three streams- science, commerce and humanities.
While last year, the highest cut-off for the science stream was 86.4% in GMSSS-35, the figure has scaled its way up to 88.6% this year.

Following close behind are two other top schools, GMSSS-16 and GMSSS-37, with 86.2% and 82% as cut-off percentages, compared to last year?s 84% and 78.4% respectively.
Commerce stream accounted for a rise in the highest cut-off by 4%, being 82.2% this year as compared to last year?s 78.2% in GMSSS-16. The second highest cut-off in this stream was registered by GMSSS-35- 79.4% as compared to 74.4% last year. The third highest cut-off was 72.6%, in GMSSS-19, as against last year���s 67% in GMSSS-40.
Though proving to be a laggard, the humanities stream caught up once the seats in science and commerce streams were filled. The stream witnessed an increase in the cut-off, by 4.4% over the last year���s figure, with the highest cut-off being 54.6% as compared to 50.2% in GMSSS-16 last year. The figures were closely followed by 52.6% and 49.5% scored by GMSSS-35 and GMSSS-19, compared to 49.8% in GMSSS-35 and 45.8% in GMSSS-46 the last year respectively.
Calling the mounting cut-offs progressive for students, principal of a government school said, ���With as many as over 600 students getting 90% and above unlike 360 last year in the league, the system clearly shows an improved study environment.���
The penultimate day of counselling for centralized admission to class-XI going on at GMSSS-10 saw 160 candidates being admitted on Monday. On the day, candidates with compartment only in the percentage bracket of 44% and above and also the leftover candidates of the sports category were called for counselling. There are still a few vacant seats in humanities stream for general category students in GSSS-20, GSSS-23, GSSS-27, GSSS-38 West, GSSS-45, GSSS-26, GMSSS- Karsan, GSSS-Dhanas, GMSSS-Sarangpur, GSSS-Khuda Ali Sher, GSSS-Khuda Lahora, GSSS-Maloya, GSSS-Behlana, GSSS-Raipur Khurd, GMSSS (TM) 26 and GSSS-Kaimbwala. Seats are also lying vacant in some courses in vocational stream.
The courses include those in structure and fabrication technology (GSSS-MMT), stenography, (Hindi), Karsan, tourism and travel (GMSSS-10), finance marketing management (GMSSS-19), ophthalmic techniques (GMSSS-32), health care and beauty care (GMSSS-8, GSSS-20 (girls), GSSS-37 and GMSSS-47), fashion designing and clothing construction GSSS-20 (G), GMSSS-32, GSSS-45, GMSSS-47 and GSSS-MMT.
