AMRITSAR: A week following the raid on camp office of Sandeep Singh Bawa, officer on special duty (OSD) to chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh, the Punjab Police have suspended Amritsar deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Amarjit Singh Bajwa.
The directions have come from Punjab home secretary N S Kalsi, who had on June 19, visited Amritsar and held a meeting with the commissionerate cops. Congress leaders had raised the issue with director general of police (DGP) Suresh Arora why the office of CM’s OSD was raided without any intimation to the chief minister’s officer (CMO). Sources in Congress said while the CM was upset over the row, Arora had pleaded ignorance.
The suspension orders issued by DGP’s office mentioned that Bajwa had failed in supervising the city police in an effective manner. His orders however did not state the reason behind conducting the raid at Bawa’s office, which has caused much resentment among the elected representatives.
Following the raid on Bawa’s office, the Congress leaders in Amritsar have been demanding to take stern action against police officers who directed to conduct the raid. The Congress leaders had also demanded registration of an FIR against the police officers involved in the raid.
Police had claimed that they had entered the OSD’s office chasing a suspect wanted in case of theft of cement bags. However, Bawa had claimed that police party was accompanied with two
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders. Bajwa has been sent to Chandigarh during his suspension period.
Earlier Gate Hakima station house officer (SHO) Harvinder Singh and a member of crime investigation agency (CIA) staff Arvinder Singh had also been suspended in the same case.
