He succumbed to his injuries at PGI the next morning. A sense of shock and grief descended on Panjab University as friends, classmates and hostelmates struggled to come to terms with his sudden death.
"We are extremely shocked. I met him in the Sector 15 market a few hours before the accident and he told me how excited he was to watch the football match late that night," said Zevito, a close friend and student of the PU Sociology department.
He said Beipachhatha, who belonged to Saiha district in Mizoram, was very fond of eating out, especially at night. "He loved going out with his friends to have fun. Surprisingly, that night he left the hostel alone. I was in my counselling class in the department and rushed to PGI when I came to know of his death," said D T Guichaprei, a friend ofthe deceased. Five of his friends have gone to his hometown in Mizoram to take his body home.
Meawhile, police have registered an FIR for negligent driving against the accused. "The incident is very unfortunate. We are holding a condolence meeting for him in the hostel on Monday. We have installed three speed breakers outside boys hostel 1, 2 and 3 to check speed limits inside the campus," said A S Ahluwalia, dean, Student's Welfare, PU. He added that parents of the deceased student were being contacted to pay condolences and for the insurance cover from the university.
