CHANDIGARH: With night temperature dropping to 4.2 degree Celsius on Saturday, city witnessed the coldest night of this winter so far. There is also a probability of temperature remaining at this level or even going down in days to come.
Met officials stated that in 2008, lowest temperature was observed on December 25 at 5 degree Celsius.
However, a comparative study of temperatures of last three years revealed that 2007 was the coldest with temperature dropping to 3 degree Celsius on December 18 and lingering around 3.4 degree Celsius.
With temperature continuously showing decreasing trend, accompanied with
cold wave, residents have had a tough time attending their offices or even going out for leisure. Most of them have limited their movements within the four walls of houses.
Amrita Singh, a resident of Sector 38, said, "The cold is bone-chilling and I have stopped going out. As schools are closed, we have some respite. Otherwise, sending the kids to schools would have been a tough call."
The cold weather made an army veteran, Lt Col (Rtd) SS Sohi, reminisce about old days.
"Chandigarh has been known for its chilly weather in winter and sudden dip in this weather has made me realize that," he said.
Mist during night has also forced those who travel on two-wheelers to put on extra layer of woollens. Mist or haze has been forecast during morning and night and sky would remain cloudy, Met officials said.
