Chandigarh: Haryana govt has given CBI the go-ahead to question five IAS officers in the Rs 590 crore bank fraud involving funds of several state departments.
Sources say Haryana chief secretary Anurag Rastogi has cleared and forwarded the file related to CBI's request for questioning certain senior bureaucrats who were part of the departments or govt bodies whose funds were siphoned. The file is now with the chief minister's office.
"Nothing can be said as of now as the matter is under investigation. Any quote or information will hamper investigations," several senior officials said though they confirmed the development.
The agency has arrested 15 suspects, including four govt officials who have since been sacked, and bank executives.
Handed the investigation in April, CBI sought govt permission to question and prosecute some IAS officers, who were suspected to have hand in either opening the bank accounts under scanner or their operation, conniving with conspirators or HAVING benefited from the proceeds of crime.
While seeking permission to probe these officers, the central agency gave details of how much money was allegedly siphoned from state boards or departments and the suspected roles of these bureaucrats.
