Chandigarh: More than half of the snatching, theft, and burglary cases registered in Mohali between Jan 2025 and Jan 2026 remain unsolved, according to data presented by Punjab chief minister
Bhagwant Mann in the recent budget session of the assembly.
The figures were shared in response to a question by BJP MLA from Mukerian, Jangi Lal Mahajan, who sought details of such cases in Mohali during the period, including the number solved and those still pending.
In a written reply, CM Mann, who holds the home portfolio, said 49 snatching, 42 other theft (including house theft) and 60 burglary cases were registered in Mohali during the period, of which 27 (55%), 30 (71%) and 32 (53%), respectively, remained unsolved.
The data pertaining to vehicle theft cases showed that of 114 cases registered during the same period, 48 cases (42%) remained unsolved.
Mahajan also sought details of action being taken by the govt to prevent the occurrence of such incidents in future.
The reply by the CM read, "Raids are being conducted by preparing and deploying secret sources to trace the accused. To control incidents like robbery, snatching, and theft, 24-hour police checkpoints are being set up by the police as per the orders of the director general of police (DGP), Punjab."
It also read, "The city is being fully monitored through CCTV cameras, and PCR teams continuously patrol the city."
The reply concluded, "As per the orders of the DGP Punjab, cordon and search operations (CASO) are also being conducted regularly."
Mahajan, when contacted, said, "Some of my acquaintances living in Mohali approached me and requested me to raise this issue in the assembly. A couple of them were themselves the victims of such incidents."
