Policemen honoured on I-Day at Mohali

MOHALI: Government Senior Secondary School, Phase 3B2, was a riot of colour, on Friday as school children and residents of Mohali town and nearby villages gathered at the school grounds to celebrate India's 57th Independence Day.

Deputy Speaker Punjab Vidhan Sabha Bir Devinder Singh, who is also the local MLA unfurled the National Flag to start the celebrations.

Colourful cultural programmes depicting the rural life of Punjab in form of Bhangra and Giddha were presented by the students of rural government schools of Sohana and Landran. Students of city-based schools also participated presenting choreographed songs on topics of national integration.
The highlight of the programme was the bestowing of honour on police personnel who showed exemplary skill and courage in doing their duty. The 11-member team of Kharar Police which successfully nabbed a gang of robbers near Kharar were given citations and a cash award of Rs 1,000 each by the MLA.
Personnel of Mohali Police who solved some major crimes committed in the city such as the murder of Engineer Gurcharan Singh and the kidnapping of Gagandeep and also in doing exemplary duty in the Ranbaxy fire incident were also honoured at the function.
Special honour was given to a little girl Jasmine Kaur who helped the police in solving the Gagandeep kidnapping case. She helped the police in identifying the kidnappers.
Teachers and students of the Mohali sub-division who excelled in board examination by returning high pass percentages and good marks respectively were also honoured at the function.
