20-year-old girl returns from the dead
TIRUCHI: A 20-year-old girl who was believed to have committed suicide returned alive, much to the consternation of her parents and the embarrassment of the police.
The police are baffled at how the parents of Vasanthi of Ashok Nagar in Karumandapam had cremated a body claiming to be their daughter's on December 26. According to police, Vasanthi, daughter of Subramanian, a car driver, a final-year student in a city college, was found charred to death inside her house on December 26.

Subsequently, the police closed the case stating that Vasanthi had immolated herself due to unbearable stomach ache - it was registered as a case of suicide. The body was subject to post-mortem and later cremated by her parents. So, whose was the body that the police found in Vasanthi's house that day? Police are clueless.
Incredibly, Vasanthi arrived at the office of the city commissioner Alexander Mohan on Saturday, with her lover Venkatesan (21), also a college student, and advocate Sakthivelan in tow. She claimed in a petition to the commissioner that she had eloped with Venkatesan on December 26 since her parents were against their affair. Vasanthi said that after hearing people say she had committed suicide, she wanted to prove them wrong and, so, made an appearance.
Strangely enough, the day Vasanthi went missing, her friend Nithya (20), daughter of Periyasamy of Thayanur, had also disappeared. During the course of investigation, police and parents of Nithya were under the impression that it was she who had eloped with Venkatesan. When police enquired about Nithya's whereabouts, Vasanthi said that her friend had an affair with another youth. Nithya had conceived and she was desperate to abort the foetus, Vasanthi told police.
Both Nithya and Vasanthi were final-year B Sc Maths students at the Chettinad College of Arts and Science.
Nithya's father Periyasamy had also lodged a complaint with Somarasanpettai police stating that she was missing from December 26. When police found that Venketsan, a youth from Dheeran Nagar, was also missing from the same day, they concluded that Nithya had eloped with him.
