Chennai: The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has invited tenders to construct a police station in the proposed Kalaignar centenary bus terminus in Kilambakkam.
Spread across 7380 sq.ft, the police station will have rooms for law and order and traffic inspectors, CCTV rooms, armoury room, control room, car parking at the ground floor and toilet blocks for men and women and a first aid room.
“We have asked for 72 policemen for traffic and law and order. There will be a control room to monitor the movement of passengers and buses in the premises. We are planning an intelligent traffic management system in Kilambakkam terminus. It will be a modern set up,” said A Amalraj, Tambaram police commissioner.
CCTV cameras will be installed across the terminus. Patrolling teams, comprising of men and women personnel, will be deployed to ensure safety of passengers, said the senior police officer.
A police station is needed as the terminus is expected to handle around 226 buses.
Meanwhile, CMDA officials said that the terminus will be opened once the culvert work is completed.
“The prefabricated portions of the culvert have arrived. The work on the drains and widening of access roads is also going on,” said an official.

Metro from Siruseri to Kilambakkam unlikelyChennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has recommended that bus services be operated instead of building a proposed metro line between Siruseri and Kilambakkam via Kelambakkam due to low estimated ridership. CMRL has suggested exploring the possibility of a metro rail extension line towards Mamallapuram via Kelambakkam and extending the line up to Pattabiram with 15 stations instead of terminating it at Avadi. CMRL has submitted detailed feasibility reports for these extensions and recommends exploring the extension from Avadi to Pattabiram.
