Plastic waste catches fire at Chennai's Perungudi dump yard; Massive GCC op averts major incident

CHENNAI: Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) on Thursday doused a fire that broke out in plastic waste stockpiled at the old dump yard in Perungudi in two hours of the incident being reported.A total of nine water bowsers, three recyclors, three JCB excavators and 30 tanker loads of water were deployed for the operation.The fire was brought under control and completely extinguished by around 11am.The blaze was noticed around 9am in a section where plastic waste had been accumulated. Abandoned vehicles and vehicles earmarked for disposal through auction were also parked in the area.
