THANJAVUR: A 75-year-old cab driver in
Tamil Nadu performed a baby shower ritual for his pet dog on Wednesday, on the 50th day of her pregnancy.
K S Krishnamoorthi of Thendral Nagar in Thanjavur invited his relatives and friends to the function.
Krishnamoorthi’s wife K Nalini passed away 40 years ago. He is living alone at his home in Thanjavur while his elder daughter is in Singapore and younger daughter lives in Chennai.
He got a Dobermann as a gift from his friend three years ago. He named the dog Abirami.
"Earlier, I had 13 dogs, pigeons, roosters and various birds in my home. Unlike other pet dogs I had earlier, Abirami is a very affectionate one. She has never left me alone. She eats and sleeps only along with me. Whenever I go out, she comes with me ", he said.
After knowing that Abirami was pregnant, he decided to perform a baby shower. As per his invitation, his friends and relatives arrived on Wednesday morning and performed a baby shower for Abirami as it is done for a pregnant woman as per the Hindu culture.
First, the pet dog was given a bath. Then it was given a dress, a cap and a garland. The dog was given a mask too. Its legs were decorated with bangles. It was given good food.
"I am basically an automobile mechanic and worked in various companies including Reliance Motors in Chennai. I have deposited my savings -- Rs 5 lakh – in a bank in Abirami’s name. I am getting Rs 2,500 as interest which I spend to take care of my daughter Abirami. I take care of my expenses from the money I earn as a driver,” he said.
“The moment my Abirami leaves this world, I also want to die,” Krishnamoorthi said.
