VELLORE: The wife and two-year-old son of a police constable were killed and three others, including the policeman, sustained injuries on Tuesday when the mini-van in which they were travelling rammed a stationary container lorry on the Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway on the outskirts of Ambur. The deceased has been identified as Gowthami, 26, from Palacode, wife of R Sivamoorthy and their son.
Gowthami was working as assistant professor in a private engineering college in Chennai.
Sivamoorthy, his relatives Venkatesan, who was driving the mini-van, and Kalippan sustained injuries. Sivamoorthy has been admitted to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital, while two others are undergoing treatment at the Government Hospital in Ambur, said the police.
The accident took place at about 3.45 pm on the outskirts of Ambur. Sivamoorthy who worked in Chennai harbour station as a police constable got a transfer to his native place, Palacode. He vacated his house and was travelling along with his family.
Two of his relatives, including the driver, had come to help Sivamoorthy to shift his belongings to their native place.
When the van was nearing Ambur, Venkatesan lost control of the vehicle and rammed the container lorry.
Gowthami was killed on the spot, while the child succumbed to the injuries at the Ambur Government Hospital.
