Anaikatti residents appeal to forest dept to maintain water pits well

COIMBATORE: Tribals and people in villages in and around Anaikatti have appealed to the forest department to maintain the water tanks built by them inside the forests well.
They say that since the tanks, especially one opposite Ganga Chamber, is not maintained well, elephants cross the main road to drink from a water pit inside Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History.
Social activist Joshua G P N says the forest department built a concrete water tank for wild animals to drink water, inside the forest opposite Ganga Chamber. The water for the tank was being supplied by a private farm close by. “However, due to neglect by the forest department, the pipeline supplying water to the pit has been blocked. With no water in that pit, wild animals cross the main road to drink water in a pit in SACON,” he says.
Tribals say that as a result, the wild animals are always at a risk of hitting vehicles, injuring themselves and commuters.
“We appeal to the department to just clear all the blocks in the pipelines leading to the water pits, and for them to ensure that the pits have enough water,” says Joshua.
