COIMBATORE: P Ramasamy, director (in-charge) and S Lister, investigator, both from the National Commission for Schedule Castes (NCSC) for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry visited Karaiyampalayam village near Sulur on Monday. They conducted an inquiry with R Ganeshan, 43, the dalit who was assaulted by higher caste men a few days ago.
The NCSC officials ordered the district administration to pay 1.80 lakh as compensation to the attacked man’s family and ordered the police to take action against the accused.
“Ganeshan’s family was given 1.80 lakh as compensation by the district administration. Police assured us that they would arrest the accused within two days.” said P Ramasamy.
On Monday morning, Ramasamy, Lister, revenue divisional officer Mathuranthagi and rural police officials visited Karaiyampalayam where they met Ganeshan. He told the NCSC officials that he was severely beaten by a few upper caste men and requested the officials to take appropriate action against the attackers.
N Panneerselvam, president of Social Justice Movement said that police threaten dalits if they approached the police to lodge complaints against upper castes.
