The duo told him that there was a vacancy in a chocolate company in Canada and demanded 10 lakh, Jeevaraj said. “I was not in a position to pay the amount. The duo asked me to pay 4 lakh and pay three months’ salary after joining work. I refused to pay the money and went back. Later, Kannan visited my hometown in Namakkal district and said the Canada firm was ready to pay 2 lakh per month. I transferred 1.90 lakh in three instalments to a bank account in December 2019 and was told that I would get a call from Canada soon.”
The youth said he received a call from a woman, who introduced herself as Kavya. “She collected some details. Meanwhile, lockdown was implemented due to the pandemic. Kannan told me that the pandemic won’t affect the job opportunity and demanded 2lakh. I gave a cheque for 2 lakh to Kannan on May 31, 2020 and he issued an offer letter,” he said.
After coming to know that the offer letter was fake, Jeevaraj asked Kannan to return the 3.90 lakh. But Kannan refused. Based on Jeevaraj’s complaint, CCB sub-inspector L Appukutty registered a case against Kannan under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code.
CCB inspector M Muniammal and team arrested Kannan and seized a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) from him on Friday. He was remanded in judicial custody and was lodged in the Tirupur district jail.
