Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday lashed out at the government after top party leaders, including Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were stopped at the Ghazipur border while en route to violence-hit Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh.

Speaking to ANI, Tharoor emphasized the importance of public representatives engaging with citizens in times of crisis.

"A major incident occurred in the country, resulting in the loss of five lives. It is the responsibility of public representatives to meet people and address their grievances," Tharoor stated.

He further accused the government of preventing leaders from connecting with the public. "This government does not want leaders to interact with the people. In the 21st century, instead of digging out centuries-old issues, we have pressing contemporary challenges to address," he added.

Union minister Pralhad Joshi alleged that the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, plans to visit violence-hit Sambhal to escalate tensions in the area.

He stated that Union Ministers had been barred from visiting Sambhal following a decision by the state government and accused Congress leaders of intending to disrupt the law and order situation.

"Everyone knows what Congress has done wherever it has formed a government, be it in the country or any state. There is a law and order issue in Sambhal, and they (Congress leaders) are going there to create unrest. The state government has decided that no cabinet minister will visit the area, yet the Leader of Opposition wants to go there and inflame the situation," the BJP leader told ANI.

The Latur unit of the Asaduddin Owaisi-led party staged a protest at the Mahatma Gandhi Chowk in Latur around 11 am. Violence erupted in Sambhal during a protest against a court-ordered survey of Shahi Jama Masjid on November 24 as protesters gathered near the mosque and clashed with security personnel.

'Govt's intentions seem wrong as if they are trying to hide something': SP MP Iqra Hasan after police stop Rahul Gandhi's Sambhal visit

After Congress leader and leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, was stopped from visiting violence-hit Sambhal district, Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Iqra Hasan criticised the government, alleging its actions suggest an attempt to conceal information.

Speaking to ANI, Hasan said, "We just want to know what happened there and who are the people behind it, but the government's intentions seem wrong, as if they are trying to hide something."

Earlier today, Rahul Gandhi, along with Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi and other Congress leaders, was stopped by police at the Ghazipur border while attempting to travel to Sambhal. The delegation subsequently returned to Delhi.

BJP, RSS tearing Constitution to shreds: Kharge on Rahul stopped from visiting Sambhal

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge launched a sharp attack on the BJP and RSS on Wednesday, accusing them of "tearing the Constitution to shreds" after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was prevented from meeting families affected by recent violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh.

A Congress delegation led by Gandhi, accompanied by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, was stopped by Uttar Pradesh Police at the Ghazipur border. The team was on its way to Sambhal, where prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC are in place. The Congress leaders remained at the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border for about two hours before returning to Delhi.

Kharge expressed his outrage on X (formerly Twitter), writing in Hindi, "The BJP-RSS are busy tearing the Constitution to shreds with their divisive agenda. Preventing the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi from visiting the victim families in Sambhal proves this very thing."

The Congress president further accused the BJP and RSS of fostering communal discord. "Creating hatred between two communities is the only ideology of BJP-RSS. For this, they not only tore apart the Places of Worship Act passed by the Constitution, but now they are hell-bent on opening branches of their market for hatred everywhere," Kharge stated.

The Congress delegation's attempt to visit Sambhal was part of the party's effort to engage with the victims of recent communal clashes in the region. The BJP, however, has defended the decision to enforce prohibitory orders, citing concerns over law and order.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said that he was ready to relinquish his convoy and go to violence-hit Sambhal alone with the police but the authorities had asked him to return after some days, adding that this is against the rights of the LoP and against the Constitution.

Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak said an independent probe is on in the matter and the opposition should support the government in maintaining peace in Sambhal.
