NEW DELHI: Commuters will have to wait for another 10 days for seamless drive through the entire Dhaula Kuan-RTR flyover stretch. While officials from National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said the ongoing work at Parade Road crossing, which causes vehicle pile up from Mahipalpur side, will be completed in next one week, the slip flyover from Cantonment area to Dhaula Kuan will be opened for traffic from Sunday.
NHAI has been tasked to make the entire stretch signal free and it’s one of the crucial projects that Union highways minister Nitin Gadkari had launched to improve seamless road connectivity to the airport. The highways authority had started the trial run on this 150-metre long 3-lane slip flyover.
“With the opening of this elevated portion, traffic coming from cantonment area can smoothly reach Dhaula Kuan. We have already opened the long flyover which is used by traffic coming from Mahipalpur and Parade Road side to reach Dhaula Kuan. The right turn from Dhaula Kuan side to Cantonment area has been made free. So, now there is no congestion. Commuters coming from Mahipalpur side will get huge relief once we complete the ongoing improvement works at Parade Road crossing,” said an NHAI official.
He added that only one component of the entire project — 67-metre underpass across the NH linking RR Hospital and Cantonment area - will take some more time and they are hopeful of completing the work by October end. This underpass will ensure seamless connectivity from Subroto Park and RR Hospital to Cantonment area.
Officials said that considering that the highway stretch is meant for traffic moving at high speed, provisions have been made for pedestrians to cross the road without any hassles. The foot over bridge adjacent to the Airport Express Metro station has been revamped and escalators installed for pedestrians.
