Door-to-door visits for Census 2027 begin today
50K Enumerators Have Time Till June 14 To Cover 33L Households In 250 MCD WardsNew Delhi: Nearly 50,000 enumerators are set to begin door-to-door visits for Census 2027 house-listing operations across Delhi from Saturday. For four days, the enumerators will carry out “ground truthing” — a process in which they will physically verify locations and match them with house-listing block maps provided to them, before they start knocking on doors. In the coming days, they will visit every household within their assigned areas. Each one of them is expected to cover around 150 to 180 houses, completing the task before June 14. The work will lay the foundation for one of the country’s most extensive data collection exercises. The 250 wards of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) have been divided into around 46,000 house-listing blocks, with each block comprising 150 to 180 houses. Delhi has nearly 33 lakh households, all of which will be marked by the enumerators during the house-listing exercise.“Before the door-to-door enumeration begins, enumerators have to physically verify the boundaries of house-listing blocks, identify roads, lanes and landmarks, and carry out systematic identification and numbering of buildings and houses to ensure that no household is missed.
Once the mapping is completed, the actual enumeration work will be undertaken through door-to-door visits,” said an official. All enumerators will get identity cards that they must display on duty. They will also be provided with a ‘Census of India 2027’ bag in which they will carry a diary, water bottle and cap.The house-listing exercise will capture detailed information across 33 parameters. These include identification details, such as building and census house numbers, structural aspects like floor, wall and roof materials, and household-level data like the number of residents and the socio-economic category of the head of a household. The questionnaire also covers living conditions and amenities, including water source, sanitation facilities, types of fuel used for cooking and access to electricity. In addition, it seeks information on assets, such as televisions, internet access, computers and vehicles, along with dietary indicators like the main cereal consumed. A mobile number will be noted down for census-related communication.District officials have held high-level coordination meetings with police and census officials to review operational preparedness, logistics and security arrangements for the exercise. “The meetings focused on ensuring coordination between the civil administration and police authorities so that the enumeration work can be carried out smoothly across all the districts,” said an official.Meanwhile, the self-enumeration exercise, which began on May 1 and concluded on Friday, saw an encouraging response, with around 1.32 lakh people completing it. South West district emerged as the top performer in Delhi, recording 23,163 completed self-enumerations. It was followed by North West district (22,661), North East (20,762), West (14,017) and East (12,943).
