Karol Bagh lease scam: Visually impaired railways employee cheated of Rs 14.5 lakh
New Delhi: A visually impaired Indian Railways employee was allegedly duped of Rs 14.5 lakh after leasing a property in central Delhi’s Karol Bagh, only to later discover that it had already been taken over by a finance company following a loan default. Police have arrested a 51-year-old taxi driver, accused of carrying out multiple such frauds by selling or leasing mortgaged properties to unsuspecting victims.
The case came to light after the complainant approached the DBG Road police station on Dec 29, 2025. He told police that he had been offered a property in Karol Bagh and a lease agreement was duly executed. However, when he later went to take possession, he found that the premises had already been repossessed by a finance company due to non-payment of a loan.
Police said the accused had availed a home loan of Rs 98 lakh against the property in 2017 and later defaulted on the repayments, following which the finance company took possession. Despite being aware of this, he allegedly induced the complainant to enter into the lease agreement two years later.
“During the investigation, police found that the accused was evading arrest by frequently changing mobile numbers and locations,” said DCP (central) Rohit Rajbir Singh. Teams analysed call detail records to develop leads.
Through technical surveillance, the police identified a newly activated mobile number. Its analysis, along with inputs from local informers, helped the team trace his location to Nangal Devat village in Delhi.
A raid was conducted and the accused, identified as Ravindra Garg, was found working as a taxi driver and apprehended. Police said he is suspected to be involved in several similar cases, with the total fraud amount estimated to be around Rs 2 crore.
During questioning, Garg allegedly told police that he invested the money in a tourist transport business that failed and admitted to repeatedly using the same modus operandi.
