NEW DELHI: Pradeep Sharma, the alleged killer of journalist Shivani Bhatnagar on Thursday claimed before a city court that the prosecution had allegedly changed crucial pieces of evidence, including a wire, recovered from the crime scene. Pradeep who has been dubbed by the prosecution as Shivani's assailant claimed manipulation of the key piece of evidence, as his counsel D B Goswami summed up his arguments before Additional Sessions Judge Rajender Kumar Shastri.
The January 23, 1999 murder of Indian Express scribe Shivani involves suspended IPS officer R K Sharma as the key accused, who had allegedly hired five persons including Pradeep to eliminate her. With arguments of R K Sharma and Pradeep already complete, the case is fast approaching its conclusion.
Today's arguments saw Goswami vehemently argue over the purposeful manipulation of the wire, allegedly recovered by the police from the scene of the crime. The counsel, reading out parts from various prosecution testimonies, said there was a difference in the description of the wire, as made by the post mortem medical experts and other concerned witnesses. Goswami, who began his final arguments on February 11 had earlier questioned the veracity of key prosecution evidences like the visitor entry register to Shivani's Navkunj apartments. The register, which according to the prosecution, was found to be containing the finger prints of Pradeep, was used to substantiate its claim that the accused went inside Shivani's house to kill her. Apart from Sharma and Pradeep, the case also includes -- Satya Prakash, Ved Prakash Sharma, Ved alias Kalu, Sri Bhagwan -- as co-accused.
